Combination sump pumps are two sump pumps configured to use one main discharge pipe. Each of the two pumps serves a different purpose and operates differently. One of the pumps is a primary sump pump or main pump and the other pump is known as a battery backup pump.
The primary pump depends upon electrical current to run. It is the main pump that is to be used day after day. The battery backup pump is the secondary pump and depends upon deep cycle marine batteries to run. The backup pump is meant to be used only when the primary sump pump fails.
Combination Sump Pumps have at least four benefits.
1) Many home owners do not think about what happens if a primary pump fails during a heavy rainstorm because they assume that it will run and never fail. All primary pumps will fail sometime during their usage whether it is because of a primary pump mechanical problem or a failure of the electricity. The most common primary pump failure is the switch. Pump manufacturers want the homeowner to have a backup for their primary sump pump when it fails. So they make it easy for the homeowner to install the combo which comes preassembled with n primary and a backup sump pump.
2) Choosing a backup pump that matches the pump performance of a primary pump is not easy. Manufacturers carefully test their pumps for performance and know what the pumping rate of a battery backup pump should be to take over pumping if the primary pump fails. The manufacturer assembles the primary and backup pump that support the required pumping capacity.
3) Not all primary and backup sump pumps will fit into a basin when installed together. Rather than ask the home owner to try by trial and error, manufacturers preassemble a primary and backup as one unit and tell the home owner how much basin diameter is needed.
4) Installing a preassembled and plumbed unit makes it easy for any home owner to install. All the homeowner needs to do is attach the discharge pipe from the combo pump to their existing discharge piping system.
The combination sump pump comes preassembled from the manufacturer. It comes assembled with the primary and battery backup attached to a single discharge pipe. The check valves are already installed either at the discharge port (toward the base of each pump) or in the single piping which is configured to attach to a single discharge pipe. The homeowner is not responsible to plumb the two pumps. This has already been done. The homeowner only needs to measure the diameter of the existing pit, identify the horse power required for the primary pump, and then buy the pump.
Glentronics shows how easy it is to install a combination sump pump. The video will bring confidence to its viewers.
There are six popular combination sump pump brands. These six bands include Zoeller, Wayne, Watchdog (also known as Glentronics), Liberty, Superior, and Flotec.
Each of their combo models includes a one-third or a one-half horse power primary pump; this makes it possible for the home owner to choose the right sized combo pump for their water pumping needs.
Each of these manufacturers includes a 1/3 horse power or a 1/2 horse power primary pump with the battery backup.
The following brands offer WiFi enabled sump pump connectivity: Zoeller, Wayne, Liberty and Glentronics. Here are the models.
The following brands are NOT WiFi enabled but they do offer combo sump pumps. Here are the brand models.
Wayne offers the longest warranty - five years for the Basement Guardian. The WSS30Vn has a 3 year warranty.
When it comes to a sump basin size needed, all Combination Sump Pumps require at least a 15 inch diameter pit.
The Sumpro System is not a combo system however it offers the greatest pumping performance because any primary pump can be used as a backup pump as well because battery power is converted to AC power.
