Primary submersible sump pumps are the main pump that runs on electricity. They are made to be submersed in water. Full pump motor submersion does not hurt them. In contrast pedestal sump pumps motors are not to be submersed in water. The motor sits on a pedestal (column) so the motor is above the basin.
Cast iron housing is recommended for one-half horse power pumps or larger. Cast iron dissipates heat well. Dissipation of heat extends the motor's life. Thermoplastic traps heat. Aluminum doesn't heat quickly, but once it does, it does not dissipate heat as quickly as cast iron. For that reason we recommend cast iron.
It is important to know the size sump pump needed. Too much horse power leads to early motor burnout. Obviously not enough horse power leads to potential flooding during heavy rains. Check the horse power of our current pump. It would be wise to do a quick test to see if your pump is right sized.
The vertical float switch is recommended because it takes less basin diameter and will not get caught on the basin wall. The two-pole float switch used by the Zoeller M63 and M85is upgraded with an additional connecting bar and switch case boot to extend the life of the float switch. The Zoeller M63 and M95 come with a 5 year warranty.
Zoeller is the only pump company that performs two tests on every pump, performance and leak test, before shipping the pumps from the factory. All of their Professional and Premium series submersible sump pumps are made in the USA. Liberty Pump, Red Lion and Little Giant also make their pumps in the USA though do not test as extensively.
Rarely do sump pump seals leak; however if this is a concern, Liberty Pump design includes a Unibody which eliminates the pump motor seal.
Most sump pumps keep the volute (pump base) immersed in water so the motor is not "dry" pumping; however Liberty and Superior pumps can pump the water level down to one-eighth inch from the basin bottom.
Float switches are the first thing to fail for any pump. The eco-friendly way to handle a sump pump float switch failure is to replace the switch rather than discard the entire pump. Zoeller, Wayne, Superior Pump, Red Lion, Little Giant, Basement Watchdog parts are easy to purchase online.
