#1 Zoeller M53 1/3 HP
The Zoeller M53 Primary Submersible Sump Pump, known is the Automatic Mighty Mate, is the most popular submersible sump pump even among plumbers and contractors. 
 
>This pump is a work horse even though it is 1/3 HP. This 1/3 HP sump pump can pump as much water as many other manufacturers 1/2 HP pumps. At a 15 foot lift and an 18 inch diameter pit, the pit empties in about 5 seconds. At a 10 foot lift it pumps 2040 gph. Its no clog design includes a votex impeller and can handle solids of up to 1/2 inch. It is not meant to be a serage pump; however it could pump out washing maching water.
 
The pump runs very quiet. All of its electrical parts are sealed from water therefore this pump could be used outdoors. It has a cast iron housing with an epoxy coating. 
 
The M53 turns on when the water level depth is 7 inches and shuts off when the water depth is 3 inches.
As with all sump pumps, the float switch should be replaced every 3-5 years. The switch is very easy to replace with screw driver and the $25 part # Zoeller 004892 Replacement Switch for M53, M55, M57 and M98 004892 or 004705. When the switch is replaced the rubber gasket should also be replaced. The M53 comes with a vertical float. The float has a protecctive guard to prevent it from getting hung up on the sump basin walls.

If the Zoeller M53 is installed in an 18 inch diameter pit, there should still be room to install a narrow battery backup pump. Its widest part is 10.5 inches. The companion battery backup sump pump often installed with this primary pump is the Zoeller 507.
 
The pumps discharge port is 1 1/2 inches MPT.
Even though the starting amp load is low (9,4 and running amps are 4.7). it is important to have a dedicated circuit for each sump pump. The pumpp comes with a 9 foot cord.

#2 Zoeller M98 1/2 HP
The Zoeller M98 Primary Submersible Sump Pump is extremely durable. Its housing, volute and impeller are made of cast iron for long life and quiet operation. This pump, like the M53 comes highly recommended by plumbers and contractors.  The cast iron used is very strong and the pump weighs 35 pounds. This means it will not move it the pit easily.
 
Even though its 1/2 HP it is as powerful as any 3/4 HP made by many other manufacturers. At a 10 foot lift it will pump 3660 GPH. It has a shut off head of 23 feet.
 
The float will activate the pump when the water is 9 1/2 inches from the bottom of the pump and will shut off at 3 inches. This pump is for those who get a heavy volume of water coming into the sump pit. The float switch needs to be replaced every 3-5 years depending upon amount of usage. The float is the first thing to go in most all pumps. But replacement switches are available (Part no. Zoeller 04892)
 
The non-clogging design, a vortex impeller, prevents it from getting clogged unless thjere are solids greater than 1/2 inch.
 
The pump cord is 15 feet with a 3-wire neoprene cord. A dedicated circuit should be used to ensure fuses will not blow.
 
The float is two-pole which means it is attached by a pole arm on the top and bottom. This gives the float more stability. The float is solid; therefore it cannot be punched and allowing water to sink it.
 
All screws, float guard, handle arm and seal assembly are made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion.
 
The pumps discharge port is 1 1/2 inches NPT. To install this pump with a 2 inch discharge piping system, just buy a 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch adapter. The 1 1/2 inch end is screwed into the M98 discharge port.
 
If the Zoeller M98 is installed in an 18 inch diameter pit, there should still be room to install a narrow battery backup pump. Its widest part is 10.5 inches. If a backup sump pump is installed you can use the same discharge piping system as long as the backup pump discharge is hooked in with a 45 degree elbow and its own check valve.
 
This pump is popular for those whose current sump pump runs frequently and often works hard during a heavy rain storm.
 
This pump like other submersible sump pumps operate best in a sump pit liner. Sump pit liners eliminate debris falling from the sides and that which is loose on the bottom.
The M98 must be installed with a check valve. The check valve will prevent water from running back down the discharge pipe and back through the pump into the sump pit and cause the pump to keep pumping the same water over and over.
 
It is important to check the discharge piping system to make sure it does not freeze in the winter. If it freezes the pump may keep running and running. If that is the case, unplug the pump until the discharge pipe becomes unthawed.
 
Since the M98 has high pumping capability it is recommended that only solid PVC discharging piping is used. The pump should not be used with flexible tubing.
It is recommended that you do not remove the existing float and operate the pump with another external float. The existing float that comes with the pump is electronically and mechanically calibrated to turn the unit on when needed.

#3 Superior Pump 92330 1/3 HP
The Superior 92330 Primary Submersible Sump Pump is unique because it can be used as a sump pump in a pit or as a utilty pump by removing the tethered float.Those who do not have a sump pit and do not get a lot of water during heavy rainstorms will find this pump very useful. As a utility pump it will remove water from a floor up to around one inch.
 
The switch is inside the float so when the water raises the float high enough the switch is triggered to fun the pump motor. If the pump were used as utility pump, the tethered float would be removed and the pump would operate as a manual pump which means you would be responsible to put the plug in to run it and pull the plug out when there is no more water to be removed.  With the attached float the pump will function as a fully automatic pump. If the float is attached to the pump, the float willl activate the pump at somewhere around 9 inches high. Replacement floats are easy to find and replace. 
 
The plugin for the electrical outlet is piggyback which means the pump motor is plugged into the outlet on the piggy back swith connection. This type of design allows the homeowner to remove the float and plug the motor cord diretly into an electrical outlet.
 
Even though the 92330 pump is only 1/3 HP it will also lift water up to 25 feet of vertical height. At a 10 foot lift ti will pump 1,680 GPH or 28 gpm. At a 5 foot height it will pump 2,040 GPH and 34 GPM. 
 
This Superior Pump is also popular because it has an adapter to be used with 1 1/4 inch or 1 1/2 inch discharge piping. You could also put a 1 1/4 x 3/4 inch galvanaized bell reducer on the pump then put a 3/4 inch male pipe into the 3/4 inch male adapter thread and attach a 3/4 inch garden hose.
 
The pump has a thermal over-load protection built in. Liquids hotter than 120 degrees fahreheit should not be pumped with the Supior 92330.
 
Only 4.1 amps are used during operation; therefore it is very energy efficient. It is 120V AC.
 
The power cord is 10 feet long. A dedicated circuit breaker should be used. The pumps has two cords. One cord is for the pump motor and the other one is from the float switch. When the pump is used as an automatic pump, the motor cord is plugged into the back of the float switch plug (believe it or not the float switch plug does have a socket for the pump cord to be plugged into) and the float switch cord is plugged into the walls electical socket,
 
As for solids handling, Pump 92330 can handle up to 1/8 inch. It has a bottom screen to stop larger debris from entering the pump. Because it has a bottom screen, it is necessary to clean the screen periodically.
The tethered flost is adjustable so the swing tethered length can be shortened which makes it an easy pump to use in a crawl space.  There is a clamp which can be loosened and then the length of the tether can be shortened.
 
One homeowner became very creative and placed the pump in an 18 gallon plastic tote which has holes all the  way around the sides of it so the water would run into the tote and be pumped out.
 
This pump could also be used to drain a pool. If a garden hose is used a 3/4 inch adapter would be required. One home owner used the pump to pump out a 6 foot deep pool that contained 2200 gallons of water.

#4 Liberty Pumps 257 1/3 HP
The Liberty Pumps 257 is a cast iron, solids handling, vertical magnetic float switch, 1/3 HP Submersible Sump Pump.
 
Since the housing is cast iron, it will withstand the heating from the motor caused when the pump runs continuously for over five mintues of time. Cast iron is not destructible and is not weakened by oxidation (rust). In addition, the cast iron housing has a durable epoxy powder coat finish which increases the toughness of the iron.
 
The switch on this is unique. It has a very narrow vertical float which is protected by the proturding switch head so the float will not get hung up on the sump pit wall. The float and control rod move as one piece into the head assembly. As the water rises and lowers, the assembly moves slighly accordingly. The magnet in the float rod assembly is attacted to the switch whihc in turn closes the curcuit and causes the pump to run.
 
The pump body is also unique in that it is a one piece housing unit. This eliminates the need for the bottom motor seal and ring which after usage can leak.
 
In addition, the power cord can be removed. This feature makes it easy to replace the cord.
 
The Liberty 257 is an energy saving model using only 5.2 running amps.
 
The maximum effective lift for this pump is 21 feet. It will not operate at 23 feet lift height. At a 5 foot lift it iwll pump 45 gpm or 2,720 gph. At a 10 foof lift it will pump 37 gpm or 2,220 gph.  The turn 'on' height is 7 inches and the turn 'off' height is 3.5 inches.
 
The warranty fo this pump is 2 years.
 
It has a Vortex style impeller for superior solids handling. It can handle solids up to 1/2 inch.
 
It will fit in a narrow pit since the Liberty 257 is 9.6 inches wide.
