Zoeller M57 - Built For Decades. More Cast Iron Than Zoeller M53
The Zoeller M57 truly is built for life with more cast iron parts than the M53. The additional cast iron parts found in the M57 include the pump base, the vortex impeller and the shaft. A cast iron impeller can withstand the entry and whirling of small pebbles and debris much better than a plastic impeller. Plastic is more likely to break. A cast iron impeller, shaft and base can also dissipate heat much better than engineered plastic which comprises the M53. The additional cast iron parts add four extra pounds makes the M57 more stable during heavy continuous pumping.
So if plumbers and consumers are very pleased with the M53, they will be even more satisfied with the M57 (0001 or A).
Cast Iron Parts Found In Both The Zoeller M53 and M57
Both the M57 and M53 have cast iron motor and pump housing, switch case and sleeve bearing. Cast iron is stronger and dissipates heat better than sump pumps made from stainless steel, aluminum, zinc or thermoplastic. Even the cast iron grade used by Zoeller is better than other brands.

- The pump is 100% Cast Iron With Stainless Steel Hardware. Cast iron dissipates the motor heat to give it longevity. Plus it adds weight to keep it stationary during heavy continuous pumping. The cast iron is epoxy coated to retard cast iron corrosion.
- The float switch is a 2-pole snap action float switch so is not impacted by pit water contaminates such as minerals which can cling to a magnetic vertical float switch style. The switch is tested to pump 1 million cycles. Because it is mechanical it does need replacement. The replacement frequency depends upon usage. The float is solid though buoyant and cannot be punctured so it fills with water and fails to operate.
- Its non-clogging vortex impeller design prevent impeller clogging. This style of impeller is good for pits with small spherical solids such as pea gravel.
- Each pump is tested twice before leaving the factory: once for leaks and again for pumping performance. Each pump will perform according to Zoeller's published pump performance chart. This means that each pump will work when installed.
- Zoeller builds each of its motors in its USA factory for the Professional series which M57 is and its Premium Series so they fit snuggly and keep unwanted air volume out. Many pump manufacturers get their motors from their party vendors so they do not fit as snuggly and can have air gaps.
- Only 80% capacity of the motor is used so its 20% in reserve can be tapped into if pumping is very rigorous.
Cons
- The float switch will eventually fail because it is mechanical. Fortunately Zoeller makes replacement switches that fit and work. Buying the switch case which already has the new switch wired in is the easiest replacement switch to install. It does not require plumbing knowledge. It is a matter of loosening 4 bolts, removing the switch case (head) and placing the new one in its place.
- The Zoeller M63 is an upgrade to the M57. Its switch is tested for 3 million cycles and M63 has a 5 year warranty. The upgrades are an enhanced 2-pole float switch, a Viton boot for additional protection against moisture affecting the switch, an LED lighted plug to inform the homeowner of working electricity flowing to the pump and a 5 year warranty. My sump pump is 15 years old and it's time to replace it even though it still runs. Even though my old pump is a Zoeller, I did some research and all point to Zoeller-sump-pump as the best one. We installed the 57-A (57-0001) ourselves. It works really well and very quiet. We can't hear anything when it is on from the first floor.

Believe me, I have tried going cheap with Bog Box store pumps and every time I end up with a pump-failure during a heavy rainstorm. I knew about Zoeller but did not know how to buy one. I found I can buy one on the Internet through Amazon. I am so happy to own my Zoeller-M57. I decided to pay a little bit more and make sure I have no plastic parts.

I installed my Zoeller-M57 over three years ago and I have had no problems. My neighbor told me however, that no pump float switch will last forever and I should have a switch on hand. I took his advice. I bought switch part 004702 on Amazon. I could have bought part no 004892 also, but I chose the 4702 because it was the entire cap and switch assembly which for me would be easier to install. I want to do the installation myself. I found a lot of installation help here. I will be prepared now when the switch fails. Thanks to my neighbor.
Hopefully you measured the room available in your pit before you purchaae the pump. Its width is 10-3/32-inches and its height is 10-1/16-inches. Be prepared, it weighs 27 pounds.
Installing the M57 is easy, especially if you have done it before; however if this will be your first time, relax. You will not break anything. To alleviate stress, choose a day when the sun is shining.
The hardest part of the installation is getting the pump into the basin and cutting the PVC pipe the correct length. PVC piping is budget friendly so if you make a mistake, try again.
Basic Steps For The Zoeller M57 Installation
1) Unplug the motor cord from the old-pump.
2) Loosen the bottom check valve end so the old-pump is free to move.
3) Carefully remove the old pump from the basin.
4) If possible unscrew the discharge pipe from the old-pump discharge port and screw it into the new-pump port; otherwise cut a new length of PVC piping.
5) Place the new-pump in the basin making sure it is sitting solidly on the basin bottom.
6) Check valves do not last forever, it is wise to replace them when installing a new-pump.
7) Tighten the bottom end of the check-valve to the discharge pipe attached to the M57.
8) Plug the motor cord into the wall socket.
9) Fill the basin with water so the pump runs,, while it is running check for leaks.
10) No leaks, you are done! Congratulations!

Zoeller Pump Company has increased the warranty period from one year to three years. It is very unlikely that your Mighty Mate will fail during the three years. All of their pumps are USA factory tested before shipping; therefore it should work after installation. In addition it is unlikely that the float switch will fail during the three year time period. Remember the M57 is built to last; the switch will be the first thing to replace. Zoeller has tested it to work 1 million cycles. So every 3-5 years replacing the switch before it fails is a good idea. No switch will last forever. Changing the replacing the switch is part of maintenance. Fortunately it is easy for a non-plumber to buy parts on Amazon and install them. It is more eco-friendly and more pocket friendly to replace a broken part than disgard a failed pump.
All replacement parts are made by Zoeller; therefore they will fit and work. The following parts are readily available online: gasket, switch, case cover, assembly arm, impeller and float.
The only thing we have replaced on our thirteen year old Zoeller Mighty Mate M53 is a gasket which was very easy to replace.
The Zoeller float switch will fail before the motor or housing; therefore Zoeller makes replacement switches available for the Mighty-Mate M57.
The replacement switch part number #004892 is made by Zoeller; therefore it fits perfectly any of the series 50 and 90s sump pumps. The switch is easy to replace. See the Mighty Mate The 17 Installation Steps with pictures.
The easiest and quickest way to replace the switch is to buy the entire case cap assembly which already has a new switch, gasket and arm encased. The part number is 004702. If the water level is down to the impeller and the four screws holding the pump head turn, it may be possible to loosen the screws and replace the switch cap without removing the pump from the pit.

If your current pump runs a lot during heavy rainstorms and then runs very little during no rain periods, we recommend you purchase the N57 which comes without a float switch. Installing an external separate float switch allows you to customize the ON OFF points for the motor which decreases motor short cycling and extends the life of the motor.
Our favorite external switch is the HC6000 electronic switch. It has no moving parts, is not affected by water contaminates or chemicals and has a five year warranty. We installed ours in 2011, have done no maintenance to it and it is still working perfectly.
Each time a new pump is installed it is highly recommended the check valve be replaced as well because they do fail.
Our favorite is the Quiet Check valve because it is so quiet. The Traditional check valve is also available.
