The following information explains how their similarities and differences compare.
Indeed, they do have a lot of similiarities; but it is their differences that set them apart.

Thermoplastic does not dissipate heat generated by the snap action of the switch when activating the motor as well as cast iron does. This will cause the switch connectors to get hotter and wear faster and fail sooner since it is a mechanical part. Both models have been tested to run 1 million cycles before failure, but the M98 cast iron switch case will increase the life of the switch.
The additional cast iron pump housing for M98 helps with motor heat dissipation adds an additional eight pounds which keeps the pump more stationary during heavy continuous pumping.
Even though both sump pump are one-half horse power, M98 has a slightly more powerful motor.
At the time of this writing, the biggest surprise is the difference in price.
Choose your favorite way to learn how to install a Zoeller Sump Pump.
M98 has the longer power cord, the longer shut off height, more cast iron housing for heat dissipation, more replacement parts for each purchase and installation, is made and tested in the USA and costs less than the model 1096. M98 is easy to purchase online and install.
We own a M98 (installed in 2017), M53 (installed in 2005) and a sewage pump M267 (installed in 2013). We find these pumps very dependable. The only replacement parts we have installed over the past 17 years is a float switch and switch cap gasket for the M53. The M98 and M267 are still functioning perfectly.
