What Does Gallons Per Minute 16 - 32 GPM Mean?

Sump pump gallons per minute 16 - 32 GPM means that a sump pump rated as such by manufacturers is capable of pumping 16 to 32 gallons per minute when going thru its pumping cycle.

Such a sump pump would reach 16 - 32 GPM if it pumps 4 to 8 times a minute. Generally the distance between the float ON and OFF point is 4 or 5 inches and one inch of water for an eighteen inch diameter basin equals one gallon of water. So 4 gallons pumped 4 times a minute would be equivalent to 16 gallons of water pumped per minute.

How Does Gallons Per Minute 16 - 32 GPM Work?

Water rises in the sump basin as it enters the pit by means of the drain tile that is placed below the surface of a homes perimeter and has a connecting pipe leading into the pit. When the water reaches the ON height for the float, the switch is engaged and electrical current flows to the motor and runs the pump which pushes the water from the basin up the vertical discharge pipe and to its predetermined destination. When the water recedes in the basin below the float OFF setting, the switch disengages, the electrical current no longer flows and the motor stops.

A sump pump capable of pumping 16 - 32 gallons per minute would go through the ON and OFF cycle 4 to 7 times per minute.

The next time there is a heavy rain fall, watch your sump pump in action. Note how many times it runs in one minute. If the pump barely keeps up with the water flowing into the pit, a 16 - 32 GPM sized pump is too small for your water pumping needs.

What Size Sump Pump Do I Need?

Is 16 - 32 Gallons Per Minute The Right Size Sump Pump?

Here are the steps to help you choose the right size sump pump. This will tell you if 16 - 32 GPM Pump Performance is enough.

1) Measure the diameter of the basin.
2) Remember one inch equals one gallon of water if the diameter of the sump basin is eighteen inches. If the diameter of the sump basin is twenty-four inches, one inch equals two gallon of water.
3) Determine the distance between the ON and OFF point of the float switch. Manufactures provide this information in the pump description. The most common distance is four to seven inches. For an eighteen inch diameter pit, this means 4 to 7 gallons of water would be removed per pump cycle.
4) Count the number of times a minute the pump turns on and off during a heavy rainstorm.
5) Multiply the number of inches between the float switch ON and OFF times the number of times the motor shuts ON and OFF during 60 seconds (1 minute) and multiply that times the number of gallons one inch in the basin equals.
6) Use this example: The distance between the float switch ON and Off point is 5 inches; during a heavy rainstorm the motor turns ON and OFF 5 times; the basin diameter is 18 inches; therefore the water volume to be pumped is 25 gallons per minute (GPM).

Why Is Gallons Per Minute (GPM) Pump Performance For Submersible Pumps So Important?

Gallons per minute (GPM) pumped for submersible pump is important because ...
Horse power (HP) does not necessarily mean a higher GPH pumping capacity. For example, Zoeller and Little Giant do not make a submersible sump pump larger than 1/2 HP; however, the Zoeller M137 and M139 can pump more GPM at 10 ft. lift than a Simer, Flotec or Wayne 3/4 HP pump.
Most manufacturers measure gallons pumped by gallons per hour (GPH). therefore; we are presenting pump performance by gallons per hour. To determine gallons pumped per minute, divide GPH by 60.
The pumping lift varies per pump application. We have chosen 10 ft. lift because that is most common. If your sump pump system lift is less than 10 feet, the pump performance curve will increase as much as 20% more. For example, at 10 ft. lift the StormPro BA33 pumps 50 gallons per minute. At 5 ft. lift the StormPro BA33 pumps 60 gallons per minute.
