Zoeller Submersible Sump Pump Review by Comparison SummaryThe Zoeller M53 sump pump is by far the most popular of the Zoeller models. M53 is a best seller because its pump housing is cast iron which leads to longer life; its 1/3 horse power with its efficient motor pumps more water than other 1/3 HP sump pumps; its vertical float switch is 2-pole which requires only a slight upward movement to trigger the sump pump to run. The Zoeller M53 is very reliable; however does require a change of float switches every three to five years.
Zoeller M53 vs M57The Zoeller M53 M57 have very similar features and specifications. M53 and M57 are 1/3 HP; have cast iron pump housing and top cover, have a carbon/ceramic shaft seal, require a minimum twelve inch diameter pit, run using 9.7 amps, are thermally protected, have a float on point of 7 1/4 inches and a float off point of 3 inches, have a vortex impeller eliminating the need for a screen to prevent debri from entering the impeller, have a nine foot motor cord, have a 1 1/2 inch discharge port and have a three year warranty.
The Zoeller M57 is different than the M53 in that the M57 has a cast iron base vs. the M53 engineered thermoplastic base. TheM57 also has a cast iron impeller which is more durable. Because M57 is completely made of cast iron it weighs six pounds more. The heavier a sump pump is the less likely it is to jar and move around when the pump starts and stops.
Zoeller M53 vs M98The Zoeller M53 and M98 have some similar features and specifications. M53 and M98 have cast iron pump housing and top cover, have a carbon/ceramic shaft seal, require a minimum twelve inch diameter pit, are thermally protected, have a vortex impeller eliminating the need for a screen to prevent debri from clogging the impeller, have a one and one-half discharge port, have a nine foot power cord and have a three year warranty.
The M98 is different from the M53 in that the M98 has a cast iron base (volute), is 1/2 horse power and thus can pump 1,640 GPH more, has a six foot longer power cord, is heavier by twelve pounds thus making it less likely to jar in the sump pit when the pump turns on and off.
Horse Power
Zoeller sump pump horse power ranges from 1/4 HP to 1/2 HP. One-fourth HP pump includes model M49. One-third HP models include M53, M55, M57, M59, and M72. One-half HP modesl include M98, M76, M137 and M139.
Pump Housing
Most Zoeller sump pumps have cast iron pump housing including models M53, M57, M98, M137 and M139. However, a few models are made of bronze which is even more durable that cast iron. These models include M55, and M59. A few models have an engineered plastic pump housing including models 49, M72, and M76.
Float Switch Type
All models have a vertical float switch except model 49.
GPH
GPH or GPM varies by HP. The 1/4 HP model pumps 1920 GPH at a 5 foot lift height. the 1/3 HP models pump 2580 to 2680 GPH at a 5 foot lift height. The 1/2 HP models pump 4320 to 5580 GPH at a 5 foot lift height.
Clogging Resistance
All models have a vortex impeller which allows them to pass from 3/8inch to 5/8 inch solids.
Shut Off Head
If the vertical pumping height is too great, the pump will not work. Models 49 and M72 shut off at eighteen feet. Models M53, M55, M57 and M59 cut of at 19.25 feet. M98 and M137 cut off at 23 feet. M76 cuts off at 25 feet and M139 cuts off at 26 feet.
