Two types of float switch water level controllers
  • Mechanical Float switches for submersible sump pumps depend upon the movement of a float to trigger the switch which turns the motor on.
    • Float switches fail to quickly.
    • Floats get caught or stuck in the 'on' position and the pump motor burns out
    • Floats fail to move with the rising water and the pump motor does not turn on, the pit overflows and the basement floods.
    • Switches wear out. Manufacturers recommend the float switch be replaced every two - three years.
  • Electronic switch water level controllers for submersible sump pumps depend upon the presence of water but have no moving mechanism to activate the sump pump motor to run.

Mechanical Float switches for submersible sump pumps fail too quickly because
  • They are dependent upon the movement of the float. If the float gets caught the switch will not operate properly.
  • If the float gets caught in the 'on' position the pump motor will burn out.
  • The switch wears out as well. Manufacturers recommend the float switch be replaced every two - three years.

What is an electronic water level controller?
  • An electronic water level controller relies on the height of the water to signal an electronic controller/processor to trigger the operation of the pump.
  • It operates on the same principle as the mechanical float switch. Instead of a float switch there is a sensor or probe which detects the height of water. When the water in the pit reaches a predetermined height, the water level sensor sends a signal to the electronic controller which activates the sump pump to run. When the water level controller senses the water level has lowered below a predefined height, the signal is no longer sent and the pump shuts off.

  • Probe sending signal to electronic controller when water is sensed.
    • Wayne Water Systems has invented this electronic water level controller.
    • The probe works well if the ground water has no deposits such as calcium carbonate which causes a film to build up and the sensor fails to accurately sense when water is present.
    • If you live in an area of the country where calcium carbonate concentration is high, the sensor will need to be cleaned frequently to take accurate readings.
  • Sensor sending signal based on amount of water resistance in pit.
    • STAK Enterprises, Inc. has invented this type of electronic water level sensor.
    • It is not affected by calcium carbonate, salt brine or any water contaminate.
    • Its operation is dependent upon water resistance. When water is low in the pit it has greater resistance than the grounded sump pump. When the water level is high it has lower resistance and the sump pump motor is triggered into operation.
    • This type is the most reliable on the market today.

Which sump pump float switch water level controller is most reliable?
